Daimler will end sales of its compact electric brand Smart in the United States and Canada.
The 2019 model year will be the last in those North American markets for the fortwo model, TechCrunch reported.
“A number of factors, including a declining micro-car market in the U.S. and Canada, combined with high homologation costs for a low volume model are central to this decision,” a Daimler spokesperson told TechCrunch.
Parts and service will continue through Mercedes-Benz USA, which will also be the brand to lead the company’s electric car push in the U.S. and Canada.
Though the Smart car began in Europe in 1998, it wasn’t until 2008 that it reached the U.S., where trucks and SUVs reign in sales.
Electric vehicle sales are booming in the Silicon Valley and have made gains nationally, but the market share for EVs remains at or below 2 percent for the U.S.
In 2016, the Support Services Bureau of the New York Police Department ordered 250 Smart fortwos as the department looked to replace its three-wheeled vehicles.
