Top 5 Signs Your Car Is Begging for an Oil Change
Your engine usually won’t send you a polite reminder when it needs attention. Instead, your car gives you clues—and ignoring them can turn a routine oil change into a much more expensive repair.
Motor oil is one of the most important fluids in your vehicle. It lubricates moving engine components, helps control heat, reduces friction, and carries contaminants toward the oil filter. As oil ages, it can become contaminated and less effective at protecting your engine.
Here are five signs your car may be overdue for an oil change.
1. Your Oil Change or Maintenance Light Is On
This is the most obvious sign—and one of the easiest to ignore.
Many modern vehicles track mileage, driving conditions, engine operation, and other factors to estimate when the oil needs to be changed. When your oil life, maintenance required, or oil change reminder appears, it’s time to check your vehicle’s recommended service interval.
A red oil-pressure warning light is different. That can indicate a loss of oil pressure and should be taken seriously immediately.
Bottom line: If your vehicle is telling you it needs service, don’t keep putting it off.
2. Your Engine Oil Is Low
Low oil can leave important engine components without adequate lubrication.
If your vehicle has a traditional dipstick, check the oil while following the procedure recommended by the manufacturer. If the level is below the proper range, your engine may be consuming or leaking oil—or it may simply have gone too long without being checked.
Some newer vehicles use electronic oil-level monitoring instead of a conventional dipstick.
Either way, driving with insufficient oil can cause serious engine damage.
3. Your Engine Sounds Louder Than Normal
You know what your vehicle normally sounds like.
If you suddenly notice increased ticking, tapping, knocking, or general engine noise, it deserves attention. Oil creates a protective lubricating film between moving engine components, and problems with the oil level, condition, pressure, or lubrication system can contribute to abnormal engine sounds.
An oil change isn’t a cure for every engine noise, so unusual or severe noises should be properly diagnosed.
But if you’re overdue for maintenance and the engine suddenly doesn’t sound like itself, don’t ignore it.
4. You’ve Put On More Miles Than You Realize
Sometimes there aren’t any dramatic warning signs—you simply forgot.
Modern synthetic oils and modern engines can often operate longer between oil changes than vehicles from decades ago, but there is no single mileage interval that’s right for every car.
Your proper oil-change interval depends on factors including:
- Your vehicle manufacturer
- Engine design
- Required oil specification
- Driving conditions
- Mileage and time
- Towing, idling, short trips, or other severe-use conditions
Your owner’s manual or vehicle maintenance system should be your primary guide.
If you can’t remember your last oil change, that’s a pretty good reason to check.
5. Your Oil Looks or Smells Unusual
Engine oil naturally becomes darker as it does its job, so dark oil by itself doesn’t necessarily mean the oil is bad.
What matters more are unusual changes.
Oil that appears extremely contaminated, contains visible debris, has an abnormal consistency, or smells strongly of fuel or burning can indicate that something needs attention beyond routine maintenance.
You should also pay attention to oil spots underneath your vehicle or a noticeable burning-oil smell while driving.
Those signs may indicate a leak or another mechanical problem that should be inspected.
Don’t Wait for Your Engine to Beg
Routine oil changes are relatively simple. Engine repairs aren’t.
Keeping up with your vehicle’s recommended oil-change schedule helps maintain proper lubrication, keeps fresh oil circulating through the engine, and gives you an opportunity to catch potential problems before they become larger ones.
